Learn More About Warner's Approach to Health Professions Education
This unique, innovative health professions education (HPE) program offers practicing healthcare professionals – doctors, nurses, dentists, chiropractors, physician assistants, pharmacists, physical therapists, nutritionists, and other healthcare specialists – the benefit of an interprofessional education program with the opportunity to leverage their unique clinical experiences and perspectives to influence the future of health care delivery by:
  • Educating future healthcare professionals to be the workforce of the future.
  • Applying the science of learning to the challenges of educating the interprofessional healthcare teams of the future.
  • Becoming educational leaders in academic medicine, nursing, and other health-related disciplines.
  • Impacting the future of healthcare delivery through innovation and discovery, including tele-health.
The Warner School leads the way in research-based educational instruction, program development, and evaluation. We do not simply teach our students effective teaching strategies, but also emphasize research-based knowledge on how people learn and how change can take place through effective education. By developing a keen understanding of the science of learning, the value of experiential and workplace learning, how to effectively utilize technology-rich instruction to engage students in the learning process, and how to lead change, students emerge as aspiring clinical educator-leaders. Each of them is well trained to lead in the ever-changing healthcare environment, and able to make a significant impact on the future of healthcare and the preparation of healthcare providers and interprofessional teams of the future.

The three HPE core courses that constitute the backbone of the program are co-taught by faculty members from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Nursing, and the Warner School of Education, and are designed to be taken by students as an interprofessional cohort over the course of one year. The ability for various healthcare disciplines to not only teach, but also to learn together, bringing with it various clinical perspectives, builds mutual respect and admiration, while helping to put into practice what has become a critical component of the integrated healthcare model.

Students enrolled in the HPE program will enjoy technology-rich instruction designed to not only create the best learning experience for their students, but also to help their students understand the benefits of technology – online, simulations, video, webinars, and more – as a way of enhancing the learning experiences for their prospective students, patients, clients, and more.
