Program overview

The Elementary Mathematics Specialist (K-6) Advanced Certificate program is designed to prepare pre-service and certified educators for a mathematics specialist/coach position in New York State elementary schools. Although being a mathematics coach or specialist does not require certification, important skills are necessary to become an effective coach or specialist. This program can be taken as a stand-alone or as an enhancement to another Warner program and is offered fully online or through HyFlex course offerings.

  • Combining theory and practice: Includes coursework and practicum experiences focusing on connecting best practices in mathematics instruction to your current teaching practices.
  • Specialization opportunities:  Designed to allow you to specialize in an area that is meaningful to your professional goals: mathematics coaching, digitally rich mathematics teaching practices, mathematics professional development, or interventions and supports for students with disabilities in mathematics instruction.
  • Flexible: Customized to be most relevant to your school setting and role and to leverage courses taken in prior or concurrent programs.
  • Fully online option:  If desired, all required and elective courses in these programs can be taken fully online (meeting weekly in synchronous online sessions).

Prerequisites (as required by NYS)

  • For certified elementary educators looking to become a mathematics coach or specialist or to strengthen mathematics instructional practices in their current classroom role. 
  • For current teacher candidates enrolled in a teacher education program.

Advanced Certificate in Elementary Mathematics Specialist (K-6)

The Elementary Mathematics Specialist (K-6) Advanced Certificate is a 12-credit program consisting of a core of courses (eight credits) on mathematics theory, pedagogy, content, and practicum experiences. In addition, the program has four specializations: disability/inclusion, digitally rich teaching, professional learning, and coaching. The program offers ways to align your special interests with other programs of study at Warner. Practicum experiences are included throughout the program. Each one-credit practicum experience requires 38 hours with a specialist in the field serving as a mentor.

This advanced certificate program does not lead to licensure or prepare students for the practice of any profession in NYS. It is designed to support certified elementary educators in becoming mathematics coaches or specialists and support mathematics instruction in elementary classrooms. Customize another program

Combined master’s program

If you are interested in a master-level credential, you can pursue our customizable MS in Teaching and Curriculum concurrently with the Advanced Certificate in Elementary Mathematics Specialist for a minimum of 36 credits. Any certification program can be combined with the Advanced Certificate in Elementary Mathematics Specialist for as few as six credits. This combined program includes multiple electives, allowing you to further specialize in your areas of interest.

Customizable doctoral programs

If you are interested in a doctoral program focusing on mathematics teaching, you can customize our flexible EdD and PhD programs by choosing your specialization courses and pursuing your dissertation in this area. You can also add the Advanced Certificate in Elementary Mathematics Specialist K-6 to either of these programs for only six additional credits by appropriately choosing your electives.
