At a time when budget cuts have scaled back after-school and summer programs across the country, the Horizons Program at the Warner School of Education is growing. Horizons at Warner, a six-week summer enrichment program, will host 81 city school students this year, up from 62 last year.

Joe HendersonJoseph Henderson
Joseph A. Henderson grew up in a working-class family in a one-road town located in the middle of an oil drilling field. With no television (not until he was 16), he spent his days playing outside and building an informal, earnest relationship with the natural world around him. At the time, though, he didn’t realize the damaging effect these oil pits had on the environment, wildlife, and human health—not until he took a geology class as an undergrad.





Doctoral Programs in Teaching and Curriculum

The Warner School empowers educators to become leaders in teaching and curriculum – to use knowledge gained through research and practice to create environments where high-quality teaching and learning can take place.
 
The doctoral programs in teaching and curriculum emphasize Warner’s unique socio-historical and interdisciplinary approach; expose students to qualitative and quantitative research methodologies for use in studying the processes of teaching, learning, and curriculum development and implementation; and reflect the perspective that knowledge is socially constructed in context.  Issues of reform, diversity, and equity provide a formative undercurrent throughout these programs.
 
The active participation of faculty members in school- and community-based research and reform projects provides doctoral students with ripe opportunities for research and reform leadership.
 
Ed.D. Programs for Practitioners
Opportunities abound to pursue advance study in teaching and curriculum, as researchers, instructional leaders, and educators.  The Ed.D. programs in Teaching and Curriculum provide experienced educators with the opportunity to advance knowledge, skills, and practices as an educational leader and to enable them to draw on research to improve educational policies and practices.
 
The general Ed.D. in teaching and curriculum is open to a wide range of professionals who may be interested in completing a traditional research dissertation and/or who want to proceed at a pace of their choosing through the program.

 
The accelerated option has been designed to place the practical experience and knowledge students bring to their academics as an experienced professional to the center of their research and learning.  The accelerated option enables busy professionals to satisfy all of the coursework requirements and milestones of the Teaching and Curriculum Ed.D. on a part-time basis in three years, while maintaining full-time employment.  There is a mapped sequence of courses, which includes both required core courses and a series of elective class offerings in an area of interest or specialization.  The intensive, cohort-supported program follows a schedule that requires two courses per semester, including summers, providing just the right balance of structure and stability.

 
Ph.D. Program for Scholars
The Ph.D. program prepares educators for teaching, academic writing, and research in a college or university setting or research institute or government agency.  Many continue on to prestigious postdoctoral fellowships, research careers, and faculty posts in a variety of fields.  Warner faculty take seriously their roles as mentors and provide Ph.D. students with meaningful opportunities to apprentice in all aspects of academic life.
 
Ph.D. students must complete at least one year of residency as a full-time student during their study.  If planning to pursue the Ph.D. largely as a part-time student, it is advisable to plan the residency year later in the program, when working on one’s dissertation.
