Biography
Hairong Shang-Butler directs the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program designed for International students and teaches writing and TESOL. She is an associate professor in multilingual education and an affiliated faculty of the Center for Learning in the Digital Age (LIDA). She teaches graduate courses in TESOL, research methods, and academic writing.
Her scholarship and practice center on international education, language teacher development across transnational contexts, and refugee education. She serves as principal investigator and program director of the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program for International Teachers at the University of Rochester.
Shang-Butler also directed a Mother Cabrini Health Foundation grant that provided workplace English programs for refugees and immigrants in Western New York, aiming to improve employment, health, and education access for underrepresented communities.
An immigrant from China and a passionate advocate for linguistically and culturally diverse communities, she is committed to expanding education access for adults and K-12 students with refugee and immigrant backgrounds.
