Workshops

Workshops are open to current students and alumni. To meet New York's seat-time requirement, participants should complete all coursework one week prior to the closing date of the course.

Child abuse identification and reporting

Required for

  • Mental health licensure
  • Behavior analyst licensure
  • Teacher, administrator and school counselor certifications

Overview

Chapter 544 of the Law of 1988 requires that classroom teachers, nurses, counselors, coaches, administrators and other school service personnel complete a two-hour Child Abuse Prevention certification training from an approved NYSED provider for certification or licensure.

NYSED also requires training related to child abuse for licensed behavior analysts and mental health counselors.

Complete workshop at NYS Office of Children and Family Services and send certificate of completion to certification@warner.rochester.edu.

Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)

Required for

  • Teacher, administrator and school counselor certifications

Overview

Project S.A.V.E. is a two-hour course that is required for certification of professionals who work in the schools in New York State. It was developed as a response to the ever-increasing violence in schools. This workshop will provide school personnel with awareness of violence prevention and intervention skills and techniques that they can use.

If completed at Genesee Valley Regional BOCES, the Warner School covers the registration fee for students enrolled in a program that leads to New York State certification. Registration is required.

Dignity for All Students Act (Dignity Act)

Required for

  • Teacher, administrator and school counselor certifications

Overview

New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act (Dignity Act) seeks to provide New York State public elementary and secondary school students with a safe, supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment and bullying on school property, a school bus or at a school function.

The certification training pro-actively addresses the social patterns of harassment, bullying and discrimination. It is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to create and support an affirming educational environment for all students through addressing school culture and climate. It also includes the identification and mitigation of harassment, bullying and discrimination; and strategies for effectively addressing of the problems of exclusion, bias and aggression in educational settings.

The 6-hour certification training consists of two parts. Each is a three-hour online training with accompanying assessment. Candidates are eligible for Part 2 upon satisfactory completion of Part 1.
