EDU486 Integrating Science and Technology

Prepares secondary science teachers to effectively use technology to enhance science instruction, while furthering their understanding of fundamental ideas and concepts in science. Examines educational technology as a teaching and learning tool in science instruction and how technology may affect instructional goals and teaching practices in science education. Introduces and critically examines software, equipment, and other technological resources that can support the teaching of various scientific subjects and topics. (Meets content-pedagogy requirement for professional teaching certification).

During this course, we will work together to design and implement a six-day camp experience for youth in Sodus, NY, that is aimed at using technology to explore climate change in a way that makes a meaningful contribution to the community. We will be working in trans-disciplinary teams and will carpool to and from Sodus to reduce our carbon footprint while also building community. NOTE: it is not a problem if you do not have a car. Class days/times/location Students will meet in LeChase Hall, Rm 161, from 1:00 - 4:20 pm on the following days: Tuesday, July 2 Tuesday, July 9 Tuesday, July 16 Thursday, July 18 Tuesday, August 6 (Zoom, abbreviated) Students will meet in Sodus on the days/dates and times noted below (NOTE: travel time not included, though we can cover for anyone needing to leave before clean-up to make it back to LeChase for class): Thursday, July 11, 1:00 - 4:20 pm (adjustments will be made as needed for travel time) Tuesday, July 23, 1:00 - 4:20 pm (adjustments will be made as needed for travel time) Camp Days: Friday, July 26, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm (picnic lunch provided; place-based study) Monday, July 29, 12:00 - 4:00 pm (camp 1-3 pm; prep and clean-up times included) Tuesday, July 30, 12:00 - 4:00 pm (camp 1-3 pm; prep and clean-up times included) Wednesday July 31, 12:00 - 4:00 pm (camp 1-3 pm; prep and clean-up times included) Thursday, August 1, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (public showcase; option to stay an extra hour and share a meal)
