ED515A The Social Practices of Academic Journal Publishing

This one-credit course introduces the practices, politics, and conventions of academic publishing in the social sciences, in particular, education, educational linguistics, and psychology. We will briefly consider the range of genres of scholarly publication, but will focus on publishing in journals. Students will be guided through understanding the landscape of journal publishing, including journal citation indexes and impact factor, choosing a target journal, and guidelines and submission practices. The course will help students develop awareness of their particular issues about writing for publication. This is not primarily a writing workshop in which students work on a particular text for submission to a journal, but rather a course in which to gain the background knowledge that would support that step.
