ED515A The Social Practices of Academic Journal Publishing

This one-credit course introduces the practices, politics, and conventions of academic publishing in the social sciences, in particular, education, educational linguistics, and psychology. After briefly considering the full range of genres of scholarly publications, we will focus on publishing in different types of journals. Students will be guided through understanding the landscape of journal publishing, including citation indexes and impact factor, open access journals, predatory journals. Students will learn how to identify possible target journals for particular research findings or arguments/messages to assert, deconstruct author guidelines, and understand submission practices. The course aims to demystify the processes and practices of writing for journal publication. This is not primarily a writing workshop in which students develop a particular text for submission to a journal, but rather a course in which to gain the crucial background knowledge that supports that step. Highly recommended before taking ED515B or C.
