EDU560 Research in Cognitive Development

Provides a critical overview of theories and research of the life-span changes in thinking, learning, and language development from birth to late life. Following a brief look at the neurobiological roots of cognition, the course explores current research in the field on typical developmental change. Focuses on basic mental functions as well as complex concepts, such as consciousness, wisdom, and creativity. Addresses compensatory and therapeutic strategies based on cognitive development for cognitive losses or atypical development. Explores interdisciplinary perspectives from cognitive psychology, the information processing, cognitive science, and contextualized (ecological) perspectives, and their implications for understanding human thought, the origins of knowledge, language, culture and cognition, and key debates in cognitive development.
