M.S. in Middle Childhood for Adolescence Education Teachers (Biology) (PB5)

This program leads to the following NYS Certifications:
Professional teaching certification in the original area of certification
Extension to teach biology in grades 5-6

Program Options/Extensions:
In addition to taking the core program outlined below, students may want to consider supplementing their program to achieve other goals and pursue additional certification. Each option enhancement has specific prerequisites and/or course requirements in addition to the requirements for the PB5 base program.

  • Additional Advanced Certificate in Urban Teaching and Leadership [UT1] (0+ Additional Credits)
  • Additional Advanced Certificate in Digitally-Rich Teaching in K-12 Schools [OT3] (3+ Additional Credits)
  • Additional NYS certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) grades K-12 [NT1] (4+ Additional Credits)
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (grades K-12) (initial + professional)


Primary program course requirements

The primary program includes a total of 30 credits. The detailed PB5 Program of Study Form shows the additional requirements for the program option(s)/extension(s). When you meet with your advisor, you will complete a detailed PB5 Program of Study Form.


Entry Level Courses   

Up to 10 credits in graduate-level coursework in education or related fields to be transferred in or completed at the Warner School prior to matriculating into the Master’s degree program if approved by the faculty advisor.

Choose a course addressing issues of interdisciplinary teaching and teaching of students and faculty to maximize student learning; options include but are not limited to:
EDE477 Teaching and Learning in the Content Areas
ED446 Collaborative Teaching Partnerships in Inclusive Classrooms
EDU427A Theory and Practice in Teaching & Learning Literacy (for non-Elementary Teaching Candidates)

Electives   

Choose electives for a total of 12 credits.
 

Notes:

1. Students interested in also pursuing one or more Advanced Certificates -- see Optional Enhancements section -- can reduce the number of additional credits needed to meet these programs' requirements by choosing electives appropriately. Note, however, that internships and field experiences (identified by a course number that starts with EDF) cannot be counted towards the minimum requirement of a total of 30 credits of coursework for any master's Program. Be sure to discuss options with your advisor early in your program.

2. For students also pursuing an Advanced Certificate in Digitally-Rich Teaching in K-12 Schools, EDU434 can count as the "specialization course in teaching and learning".

Other Requirements:

In addition to the coursework indicated above, in order to graduate and to receive the certification(s)/licensure (if any) you are seeking this program has additional requirements. Please note that in some cases, while our program will provide you with all the academic experiences required for the certification you seek, there may be some additional requirements that you will have to complete independently and outside of our program in order to be granted that certification/licensure (ex: completing a certain number of years of mentored experiences). When that is the case, we have listed these requirements but also indicated that they are not a graduation requirement.

  • Initial Teaching Certification in Adolescence (grades 7-12) as specialist in biology
  • Master's Essay or Thesis
  • Dignity for All Students (DASA) Training in Harassment, Bullying, Cyberbullying, & Discrimination Prevention and Intervention
  • NYS Exam - Content Specialty Test (CST) for each area of specialization sought
  • Initiate NY State Teacher certification process with the Warner School Certification Officer
  • 3 Years of Teaching Experience with the First One Conducted in a Mentored Situation (NOT a graduation requirement but needed before applying for professional certification)
