Doctoral Programs

Doctoral Programs

Warner PhD and EdD programs prepare you for a variety of advanced positions across educational, human service, governmental, and research organizations – including faculty positions in colleges and universities. Most students entering a doctoral program have already earned a master’s degree, although there are some exceptions. Choosing Between a PhD and an EdD Program:

  • PhD programs are designed primarily to prepare researchers and higher-education faculty. As such, there’s a heavy emphasis on research methodologies, depth versus breadth, and engaging in research with faculty. Most PhD students pursue their program full time, and take four to five years to complete. A minimum one year of full-time residency is required.

  • EdD programs are designed primarily for experienced practitioners interested in using research to solve problems of practice, assuming leadership positions, and/or preparing the next generation of practitioners in their field. Therefore, EdD programs have been designed so that they could be completed part time, if desired. We offer an “accelerated” EdD option that includes a field-based dissertation and can be completed in as little as three years of part-time study; “traditional” EdD programs are more flexible but take longer to complete.
