Local Students Showcase Talent at New Youth Writing Camp

The potential of youth and the talent bursting between them was found at the first-ever Genesee Valley Writing Project’s Young Writers Camp this summer. Nearly 20 young campers, entering sixth through eighth grades, had the opportunity to learn and improve their prose and writing skills as well as meet others who are interested in writing. Campers then presented their original creative and non-fiction pieces on the last day of camp, August 10. (See pictures below.)

The weeklong Young Writers Camp, which ran daily from August 6 to 10, is a youth writing enrichment activity of the Genesee Valley Writing Project, sponsored by and housed at the University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education. The week was a fantastic opportunity for students to participate in innovative writing activities involving fanfiction, anime, multimedia tools—in addition to traditional pen and paper—and non-fiction writing activities including memoir, travel writing, nature writing, and personal essays. Writing Project teacher consultants, select New York State certified school teachers who have undergone training of the Writing Project’s annual Summer Institute, led this year’s camp, with creative writing sessions taking place in the morning and non-fiction writing sessions in the afternoon.
The Genesee Valley Writing Project (GVWP) serves teachers and students from urban, suburban, and rural regions of Monroe and surrounding counties. In its mission to improve the quality of student writing and learning in area schools, the GVWP sponsors an array of programs, including an annual invitational Summer Institute, school-based inservice programs, professional development continuity programs, and a new Young Writers Summer Camp for youth. The GVWP, funded by a grant from the National Writing Project, is a collaborative school-university partnership that is dedicated to advancing and supporting writing and literacy development throughout area schools through teacher-centered professional development.
