Professional Development Luncheon

The Role of Inquiry in Teacher Learning from the Use of Innovative Curricula

Wednesday, October 6, 2010
12-1:00 p.m.
Dewey Hall B-315
Presented by Jeff Choppin, assistant professor

How does teachers’ inquiry into student thinking in their own classrooms influence what they learn from using innovative curriculum materials? Dr. Choppin will address a range of inquiry-related practices found in other contexts, particularly lesson study, to see whether they are present in classrooms in which innovative curricula are being used. He will discuss the ways in which these practices impact teacher learning and the kinds of knowledge teachers develop. Dr. Choppin will conclude with implications of his findings for improving teacher education and mathematics achievement in the United States.
