Warner Professor Contributes to CNN Report on Kids and Race

Dena Phillips SwansonCNN recently aired a series of reports examining children’s attitudes toward race. Dena Phillips Swanson, an assistant professor in human development at the Warner School, served as a consultant on the CNN commissioned study, coordinated and led by University of Chicago professor Margaret Beale Spencer.

Swanson and Tabitha Dell’Angelo, a professor from The College of New Jersey, were invited to assist with the CNN project. For the study, this team of researchers and CNN camera crews traveled to grade schools in New York City and Georgia to talk to children and learn about their attitudes and biases toward race today, more than a year after the election of the country's first black president. The results of the study aired as part of a five-part investigative series on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360° from May 17 to 21.
