Rochester is a welcoming home to new Americans, including refugees. However, it can be challenging for new Americans to obtain resources and overcome difficulties in their lives, including housing placement, education, mental health, racial discrimination and career advancement.

In the summer of 2021, Associate Professor Hairong Shang-Butler, and her two doctoral students Xinyi Yang and Yinghua Yang joined Rochester Refugee Resettlement Services(RRRS) to teach a summer course to refugee students. They are also planning other ESL programs to refugee job seekers and refugee parents.  In this talk, they will share their experiences of teaching refugee students and their perspectives of bringing together the Warner community and the refugee community in Rochester. Jason Delooze from RRRS will share the challenges and needs of refugee families in Rochester, as well as their work with refugees from Afghanistan.

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is a success. Join this talk, learn the life of new Americans and how you can help as volunteers.
