Yu Jung HanPresenter: Yu Jung Han, Warner PhD Candidate

BTS, a boy band from South Korea, has become a global phenomenon, with their latest song staying at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for nine weeks in a row. Their fandom, ARMY, is as famous as the band for their astonishing global fan practices, which go far “beyond stan culture” (Holmes, 2020). ARMY’s fan practices range from having rich philosophical discussions on interpreting motives in the band’s music videos through the lenses of Nietzsche/Jung to initiating more than 370 charity projects worldwide in a year in the band’s name. What the band is achieving and what ARMY does is getting researchers’ attention across different fields. One example would be an interdisciplinary academic conference dedicated to the band and its fandom launched in 2020 at Kingston University, UK. This session introduces the world of the BTS fandom ARMY and walks the audience through their fan practices to discuss what education should know and do with them.
