Professor named distinguished fellow by national education finance group

Karen DeAngelis, associate professor in educational leadership at the Warner School of Education, has been selected as a 2021 Distinguished Research and Practice Fellow by the National Education Finance Academy (NEFA). She will receive the award at the Annual NEFA Conference in April.

The honor goes to individuals who have distinguished themselves in the area of current education finance research and practice. DeAngelis is an expert in school finance analysis and research. Along with teaching leadership courses at Warner since joining the University of Rochester in 2007, DeAngelis brings an economics background to her education work, and her research focuses on the allocation of resources, both financial and human, in K-12 education.

This professional honor is well-deserved.”

DeAngelis’s work has been published in several leading peer-review journals, including the Journal of Education FinanceEducational Administration QuarterlyJournal of Teacher EducationLeadership and Policy in SchoolsJournal of School LeadershipEducation Policy Analysis ArchivesEducation and Urban Society, and the Journal of School Choice. A member of NEFA, DeAngelis currently serves on the review boards of the Journal of Education Finance, a publication affiliated with NEFA, and Education and Urban Society. Previously, she served as an Editorial Advisory Board Member for ASBO International.

In addition to her scholarship, DeAngelis teaches courses on education finance, economics of education, educational policy, decision making, and quantitative methods. With her vision and clear guidance, she helped establish the Warner School’s Quantitative Consulting Services initiative, which assists students with quantitative methods in support of their coursework and research. She also served as chair of the educational leadership department and associate dean for academic programs from 2014-20. 

Prior to joining the Warner School in 2007,  DeAngelis conducted P-16 policy research for the Illinois Education Research Council. In addition, she has done educational consulting and evaluation work for several organizations, including the American Institutes for Research, the Danforth Foundation, the St. Louis Desegregation Task Force, and the St. Louis Public School District. DeAngelis received her master’s in economics and doctorate in economics of education/policy analysis, both from Stanford University, and her bachelor’s in economics from Colby College. 

The NEFA is home to scholars, students, practitioners, and policymakers who are interested in the study of education finance broadly defined.  The organization serves scholars, students, policymakers and practitioners in the fields of P-12 education finance, higher education finance, economics of education, education law, and educational policy. Learn more about NEFA.
