WATCH: Connection is Everything: Building an Inclusive Alumni Community

Karen Chance Mercurius, PhD, Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations and Constituent Relations, will share her efforts engaging diverse and underrepresented members of the University of Rochester alumni community. Alumni engagement is focused in four primary areas: events, philanthropic support, volunteer activity, and social connections. Engaging BIPOC and other diverse alumni who may not reflect fondly on their student experiences brings an additional facet to engagement: relationship repair and rebuilding. Dr. Chance Mercurius will share her approaches to building community through affinity, identity, and a shared commitment to creating a better experience for today’s students. The newly launched Black Alumni Network and Women’s Network are case studies, similar in aim but built through very custom approaches. National and local movements in support of social justice and dismantling systemic racism have also brought together a community focused on growth and change. Dr. Chance Mercurius will share the new REAL – Rochester Equity & Access Leadership – Conversations series and how it has successfully brought the University and local Rochester community together for meaningful dialogue.
