WATCH: A Strong Vision for Equity at East and Beyond

Photo of Shaun NelmsEast’s approach to delivering instruction that is culturally relevant, responsive, and sustaining across all grade levels and subject areas has helped to pave the way to success the past five years through the School’s partnership with the University of Rochester. Culturally relevant and responsive teaching at East recognizes students’ identities—including gender, ability/disability, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, language and nationality—and takes these into account to enhance teaching and learning. East’s Superintendent Shaun Nelms, associate professor and the William & Sheila Konar Director of the Center for Urban Education Success (CUES), will discuss how CUES is supporting the curricular work at East to ensure their words meet their actions and share plans for extending this work to K-12 urban schools locally, regionally, and nationally.
