Are American Liberal Arts Colleges Doomed

Over the past two years, liberal arts colleges across the country have announced plans to close or merge, including famed colleges such as Hampshire and Marlboro. COVID-19 had put additional strain on colleges. In our talk, we explore the tenuous future of liberal arts colleges through the theoretical lens of organizational ecology. By analyzing environmental conditions from this perspective, we predict closure for some colleges, but also foresee new opportunities for colleges that retain the traditional practices of liberal arts colleges.
