Wednesday Lunch Hour - Studying Teenagers' Political Thinking: What We're Learning from a Design-Based Intervention Study

Increasingly, scholarship in cultural cognition and motivated reasoning suggests that people develop, act upon, and defend political positions via ethical and cultural commitments that serve to validate or invalidate different viewpoints and possibilities in front of them. What happens when young people are pressed to consider how these commitments and other “political shortcuts” play into the ways they engage with others in political discourse and activity? In this presentation, we will discuss how using discourse tasks to elicit high school students’ political thinking and collaborating with teachers to design and enact a unit of study around open-mindedness in politics is helping us address this question.
