Canandaigua Superintendent Accepts Warner Faculty Appointment

Stephen J. Uebbing, superintendent of the Canandaigua City School District (CCSD), has accepted a full-time faculty position at the Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester in the Educational Leadership program. He has informed the District Board of Education of his intention to resign his position in Canandaigua at the end of the 2005-2006 school year. Uebbing has been superintendent in Canandaigua since 1988. He was named New York State Superintendent of the Year in 1999. Upon his departure, he will have served for almost 18 years.

“The opportunity to work with the Warner faculty in preparing the next generation of educational leaders is a perfect career transition for me,” says Uebbing. “I hope I can be a significant asset to the program at the University of Rochester.”

Dean of University of Rochester’s Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, Raffaella Borasi says, “We are very excited about having Uebbing join the education faculty at the University of Rochester. He is an experienced and accomplished community leader. We value the work he has done in Canandaigua and the deep connections he has made throughout the region’s educational community.”

CCSD Board of Education President Norma Barton indicated that the Board has had only preliminary discussions regarding the search process for a new superintendent. “However, the considerable notice Uebbing has given, and the stability he will provide through the transition period, will enable a thorough search and selection to take place in naming his successor,” says Barton. “Dr. Uebbing has provided outstanding, visionary leadership for our schools and community. His departure presents a great challenge to us. But we look forward to finding the right person to continue to broaden our school district’s tradition of academic excellence.”

“It has been an enormous privilege to serve as Superintendent of Schools in Canandaigua. Over the next year, I will remain highly focused on our many academic and capital improvement initiatives,” says Uebbing. “I count the opportunity to lead the Canandaigua City School District as one of the great blessings of my life!”

The Warner School community welcomes Uebbing and the wealth of leadership experience he brings to our school administration program.
