EVENT:  Rochester Celebrates Grand Opening of Student-Run Restaurant RYCE in Village Gate

RYCE logoThe grand opening of the new restaurant Rochester Youth Culinary Experience, known as RYCE, is Tuesday, March 7, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Village Gate (302 N. Goodman Street, Rochester, N.Y. 14607).
 
Rochester Youth Culinary Experience, Inc. has joined forces with the culinary program at East High School to create and open a new eatery that will be run completely by East culinary students and even a few students who graduated from East last year. Members and leaders of the Greater Rochester community will gather to celebrate the grand opening of RYCE with a ribbon cutting ceremony and remarks, tour of the restaurant, and samples from the kitchen.

Aaron Metras, chair/founder of RYCE, owner of Salena’s Mexican Restaurant and partner of Nox Cocktail, will speak at 3:30 p.m. Other speakers include Jeff Christiano, East lead culinary arts teacher; Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren; Dr. Shaun Nelms, East superintendent; Howard Konar, president at Konar Properties; Ashley Pallo, representative for New York State Senator Joseph Robach; and culinary students and graduates from East Upper School. The event is free and open to the public, but donations are welcome. (Online donations can be made here.) 
 
East culinary students and graduates have been—and will continue to be— deeply involved in the planning, development, and daily operations of the eatery. The menu was created by East students and features a fusion of Caribbean cuisine and soul food.
 
RYCE will be open noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant features an open kitchen and seating for approximately 60 people, with an outdoor patio that will expand seating during warmer weather.
 
About the Rochester Youth Culinary Experience: RYCE
RYCE (http://ryceroc.com) is a non-profit organization working to create a stronger community by enhancing local youth’s ability to be successful outside of school and eliminating the skills gap that exists after graduation. A collaboration between Aaron and Kelly Metras, owners of Salena’s Mexican Restaurant and part owners of Nox Craft Cocktail Lounge, and East’s culinary program, RYCE was created as an outlet for students to improve workforce readiness and entrepreneurial skills and to bring experience-based skills to youth in the City of Rochester. East culinary students, who participate in the program during their junior and senior years at East, as well as at least one additional year following high school, rotate through every role in the restaurant to learn about all aspects of successfully running a business and to prepare for future careers in the culinary arts.
 
About the University of Rochester/East EPO Partnership
The University of Rochester, as the Educational Partnership Organization (EPO) for East High School, has assumed full management responsibilities for East, effective July 2015. The new East (http://www.rcsdk12.org/east) consists of a Lower School (grades 6-8) and an Upper School (grades 9-12), and aims to prepare all students for a successful transition into adulthood. A comprehensive community school with a robust set of services to support its diverse students, East offers a strong academic and career preparation program, including a daily advisory program and a full complement of athletic and extra-curricular activities that support and engage students.
