Wednesday Lunch Hour - Considering "Emotional Design" as Key to "Universal Design": Sharing a Middle School Literacy Intervention with Emotion at its Core

Humans are amazing in the variety of emotional responses we can have to the same experience. In a classroom of learners, some will perceive the day’s activity as exciting and engaging, while others will find it anxiety-producing or boring. In this talk, we will bridge from this idea of variability in emotional responses to an example of an attempt to more effectively consider learners’ emotional experiences in instructional design. Drawing on the framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), I will share recently completed work applying the concept of “emotional design” to a technology-based literacy platform. The goal of the work was to use what we know about emotion to re-engage struggling middle school readers.
