New Graduate Entrance Exam Requirement for Teacher Education and Educational Leadership Applicants

New York State has approved and enacted a law that requires all colleges and universities with graduate-level teacher and educational leadership programs to require candidates to submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or a substantially equivalent admission assessment.

This law applies to all candidates who begin studies on or after July 1, 2016 in any teacher education (initial certification, professional certification, or certificate extension programs) or educational leadership (school building leader or school district leader) program leading to New York State certification.

Candidates matriculating (i.e., starting their coursework on July 1 or anytime thereafter) are therefore required, by New York State law, to submit official scores from the GRE General Test or Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Teacher candidates may alternatively submit the Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST), which is also a requirement for certification. Candidates who have taken another standardized graduate school entrance exam should check with Admissions to see if it qualifies as a substantially equivalent admission assessment.

The Warner School looks at each applicant individually. As with all materials submitted as part of an application, test scores will be viewed as a part of a more complex and integrated whole, and will not outweigh other indicators of your academic, personal, and professional qualifications to be a teacher or school leader.

Candidates for Spring 2017 and Thereafter If you would like to apply for admission for Spring 2017 or later, you must submit an appropriate test score by the application deadline.
