The WideNet project team will present their research on Tuesday, May 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Welles-Brown room at Rush Rhees Library.

Nancy Ares, assistant professor, and Warner doctoral students Dawn Evans, Peggy Postell, Al Schademan, Essie Sierra, and Eleanna Tsoumani will give a brief presentation and demonstrate the networked classroom technology. The will be joined by East High student co-researchers Brandon Brown, Blessin Tor, Chaz Mitchell, and Jaconna Johnson.

Refreshments will be served.

The WideNet Project investigates culturally relevant classroom technologies in secondary mathematics classrooms. Culturally relevant pedagogy uses under-served students’ cultural practices (e.g., language use, funds of knowledge) as valuable resources for learning; treats use of those practices as central issues in design of learning environments; and draws on those practices to support students’ mathematics learning. A unique aspect of this project is the collaboration with high school students as co-researchers. Together, the group is studying youth peer communities’ activities that are both mathematically rich and important resources for increasing the cultural relevance of classroom activities. This year those communities include the football team, the step dance team, spades card playing, and the soccer team.
