“Oh the Places You’ll Write!”: The Uncommon Core
The Genesee Valley Writing Project (GVWP) at the University of Rochester invites you to reconnect with writing at our spring workshop. In today’s accountability context, teachers often struggle to include writing in meaningful ways in their curriculum. We offer an opportunity for you to find writing everywhere and in everything. Teacher consultants from the GVWP are experienced classroom teachers who have found authentic ways to include writing in their work.

Sessions
Writing Across the Curriculum
Leigh Radar
Common Core Standards mandate that writing be a shared responsibility for all content areas and not just ELA.  This workshop will explore ways for teachers of math, science, social studies, the arts, foreign languages and vocational arts to meet their curriculum goals through writing projects that engage students to explore key ideas and creatively demonstrate their learning.

Multi-genre Writing
Jeff Parker
Teachers often struggle to make dry, academic tasks interesting and authentic while addressing the standards. With multi-genre responses, students are offered choice and become invested while still demonstrating mastery of content. The process can be applied across subjects and invites deeper inquiry. Participants in this session will experiment with different ways to respond to texts and come away with ideas to use in the classroom.

The Use of Figurative Writing to Help Students Understand Form and Function of Difficult Science Concepts
Jim Hahn
Using literacy to create an understanding of the functioning of cell organelles uses research to accurately describe the processes of cell organelles and creative writing/illustration to explain them.  In this way, the writer/illustrator is attempting to teach the difficult concept of cell organelle functioning.  The best way to learn and retain something, is to teach it.
