Personalized sun visors, light-up disco bracelets, handmade stuffed animals, popsicles, accessories made of duct tape, and various services—like bottle recycling, singing telegrams, hair braiding and errand running—were for sale this summer by more than 110 city students participating in the Horizons at Warner program at the University of Rochester. Horizons at Warner is a six-week summer enrichment program with a theme this year that focused on building children’s entrepreneurial skills. Each Entrepreneur Team, which consisted of certified teachers and Rochester City School District students from multiple grade levels, ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade, brainstormed and operated their own businesses over summer break. The nine teams will now present their businesses to the community on the program’s last day, August 2, during the Entrepreneurs Showcase. Presentations will highlight each team’s business plan, advertising strategies, sales and profit records, and the product line. And, all profits are being donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
