Wednesday Lunch Talk — Engaging Youth in Community Activism

Working with youth around issues of sustainability, entrepreneurship, and design, Associate Professor Nancy Ares and her students in ED 415, Adolescent Development and Youth Culture, formed a partnership with the SouthWest Area Neighborhood Association in Rochester's 19th Ward. Their collaboration pushed SWAN and Warner participants to view youth as collaborators rather than charges and as activists in community development. The presentation will focus on ways that the partnership supports the development of the SeedFolk Store, at 540 W. Main, to be a community-based business offering local, sustainably produced goods, as well as a community gathering space.
