Wednesday Lunch Talk - Reading and Writing Community: Literacies in Use

Wednesday, February 6, 2013
Noon to 1 p.m.
Genrich-Rusling Room, Level 2, LeChase Hall
Presenters: Joanne Larson, Michael W. Scandling Professor of Education and Chair of Teaching and Curriculum; and Courtney Hanny, doctoral student

Drawing on data from a long-term participatory action research study of community transformation, this work-progress session will examine literacy practices of the community as it works for sustainable change. The larger project examines one community’s effort to transform the ubiquitous urban “corner store” from an unhealthy transactional space to a healthy transformational space. We will share ethnographic data from participant observation field notes, interview transcripts, and research team meeting transcripts to solicit feedback on what we are finding about community literacy practices. Our guiding questions ask: what are the literacy practices in this setting, how are they used and for what (and whose) purposes?
