New Warner Professor Gets National Attention for Teacher Attrition Study

New Warner Professor Gets National Attention for Teacher Attrition Study

Karen DeAngelis, who is joining the Warner School faculty as an assistant professor in the educational leadership program, recently conducted a study at the Illinois Education Research Council (IERC) on teacher attrition that has garnered national attention. Appearing in publications like the Chicago Tribune, Daily Chronicle, Chicago Sun-Times, and the Edwardsville Intelligencer to name a few, the study, entitled “Leaving Schools or Leaving the Profession: Setting Illinois’ Record Straight on New Teacher Attrition,” shows that teaching is a stable profession.

The study, which is one of the largest ever to look at teacher attrition over an extended period of time and in such detail, highlights data that was compiled on more than 160,000 Illinois teachers from 1971 to 2006. The study finds that only 27 percent of new teachers leave teaching and do not return to the profession.

“The teaching profession is not in a crisis,” explains DeAngelis in the report. The report also cites evidence showing that teaching is actually more stable than other professions requiring the same amount of education. To view her study, visit http://ierc.siue.edu/.

DeAngelis, a former Southern Illinois University Edwardsville assistant research professor who co-authored the report with Jennifer Presley, examines issues related to K-12 teacher and administrator labor markets. She is particularly interested in how policies, such as salary levels and certification requirements, impact the qualifications and distribution of teachers, as well as the movement of prospective and practicing teachers into and out of the profession. She has taught courses in resource allocation and the economics of education at Stanford University and Washington University in St. Louis, respectively.

Joining the Warner School faculty in the fall, DeAngelis will teach courses on educational policy, education finance, the economics of education, and quantitative methods.
