Susan Hetherington holds joint appointments at the Warner School and in the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics, where she is an associate professor of education and pediatrics. She is the Director of the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities which focuses on the inclusion of all individuals with disabilities in their chosen communities through education, research, services, and policy. At Warner, Hetherington, a former first grade and resource room teacher, teaches courses on disability and inclusive education.
With more than 40 years working with people with disabilities, administering state and national grants, and training teachers and related services personnel, her research interests include the social construction of disability and disability categories, the development of inclusive schools, and the intersection of race and disability. She has written and received funding for a variety of grants from the Federal Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, the Administration for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, the NYS Department of Health, the NYS Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).  She sits on the OPWDD Commissioner’s Advisory Council and the NYS Rehabilitation Association Advisory Council. Hetherington is an investigator on several autism-related research grants and consults with a number of school districts around systemic issues related to inclusive classrooms and schools.
